In 2012, the world came to a grinding halt as radiation hit from a massive solar storm. Crops died, animals perished, cities fell and humans became little more than beasts themselves. Under the threat of starvation, civility was reduced to mere memory. Only the strongest men survived, and physically weaker women and children wasted to nothingness.

More than a century later, humanity struggles in the desert Wasteland that was left. The solar radiation rendered most women infertile, and the population dwindles more with each year that passes. Scattered up and down coasts, isolated cities eke out an existence from fishing, foraging and hunting for what little game remains. Outside the city walls, men face the threat of pirates and raiders.

Few women remain, divided into four classes—Wanderers, Whores, Breeders and Priestesses. They are as reviled as they are worshiped, a commodity any man must pay to touch.

There is only one rule in the Wasteland—survive.

I just found out that two more of my books are going to be translated into German! Rights to FORBIDDEN FRUIT and THE BEAUTY OF SURRENDER just sold to a German publisher. The foreign covers are always so interesting! My Japanese translation of THE DARK GARDEN is my favorite-it just looks so exotic.

Reluctantly, Luc sauntered to the front of the stage and sat in the chair Alyssa had indicated. As soon as she finished whatever the hell she was doing and talked to him, he’d tell her all bets were off. Hell, he’d pay her for her inconvenience.

Because if he stayed, his dick would get him into trouble. He’d have her naked and be between her legs in two minutes. Or less. And that would be bad. He was looking for Mrs. Right, someone uncomplicated who wanted children as much as he did and would help him keep his beast at bay. Alyssa Devereaux, stripper divine, was definitely not that woman.

Catching up...

So, once again I've been a terrible blogger-bad, bad Eden! But I've been very busy writing, and I've just finished my first erotic novel for Harlequin Spice. I loved writing this book! It's written in first person, which I love. I feel it really draws the reader right into the character's head. And this one has an ensemble cast, so it has a very women's fiction feel to it. Currently titled THE LOVERS, (although my editor tells me that will change), this is a story about a group of writers who meet at one members' house on the Santa Barbara coast for a yearly writing retreat. Bettina is shy, a bit of a recluse, so spending an entire summer with people she knows only over the Internet is a challenge for her. She's a complicated person with some troubling issues-my favorite sort of person to write about. Once there she meets Audrey and Jack, and a complex and unexpected love triangle ensues. But I think one of my favorite characters is Viviane, who owns the house. She's a widowed, 40-something ex-punk rock singer who writes dark romance novels, and I may have to write her story someday.

Meanwhile, this week I've started PLEASURE'S EDGE, my first full length novel for Berkley Heat, which will be the debut of my new pen name. I'll be writing as Eve Berlin exclusively for Berkley. PLEASURE'S EDGE is a BDSM erotic romance, which I always love to write. It takes place in Seattle, one of my favorite cities. Seattle is such a great food town, and there's some great architecture there. And something about the gray weather is so moody and lovely...I've opened the book at the Asian Art museum, which is incredibly beautiful and has an amazing collection. You must stop by if you're ever in Seattle, especially if you're an art lover like me.

I know I haven't kept up here, but I have been blogging over at The Smutketeers, the group blog I share with Crystal Jordan, Lilli Feisty and RG Alexander. We've been doing lots of interviews lately, including author KB Alan, agents Lucienne Diver and Deirdre Knight, and RG did a hysterical interview with herself when the rest of us were away. If you haven't visited The Smutketeers you really must drop by-the blog design, by the fabulous Croco, is gorgeous, and we have a steampunk photo gallery. We're hoping to shoot some new pics when we all see each other at the Romantic Times Convention next spring. I think we'll be doing post-apocalyptic costumes this time, to promote the continuity stories we're writing for Samhain, The Wasteland Series, which will be out early in 2010.
Lots going on-must go write! But since you're here, maybe you can tell me if you enjoy first person stories. People seem to have very strong opinions about this, one way or the other. I think it can bring the reader into the character's head in a way that isn't possible otherwise, and can be especially helpful with a difficult character who may be hard to sympathize with. I love to read it (when it's done well), love to write it, and my Spice editor loves first person, luckily, but what do you think?

I'll also be doing a signing for Bantam on Saturday, July 18th at 9:00 AM-you do have to be a conference attendee to come, but the books are free!

Smutty Goings on

So...lots of stuff happening. I'm writing like mad-like mad, I tell you!-trying to get three full novels done by February 1st. Insane, I know. And actually, I'm not 'trying', I'm doing it-or I'd better be, since all three are under contract.
I'm currently working on THE LOVERS, my first novel for Spice. I am so excited about this story! I contracted it months ago and have had to wait to finish other projects before starting it, and the anticipation has been killing me! These characters have been in my head, talking to me. And now that I'm actually writing it, it's flowing like crazy and I'm loving it! Here's a teeny peek:

Have you ever dreamed of having a single experience which would change you forever? I think I'd dreamed about exactly that sort of thing most of my life. In recent years I thought it was going to be about writing a New York Times best-seller. But a long time ago, before I lived through my teenage years and came out damaged on the other side, I thought it would be falling in love with a man and living happily ever after, like every other girl.

Lots to talk about this week and no time, so I'm going to try and fit it all in at once...
I'll have plenty of books coming out in the next two years due to two new contracts-a two book deal with Harlequin Spice, and a two-book deal with Berkley Heat! Very exciting, but it also means I'll be incredibly busy! I have three full novels to write by February 1st, which I begin once I'm done with the novella I'm working on now, a futuristic vampire menage story, which has been really fun to write and so different from what I've been doing the last several years. I can't announce yet where this story will appear-stay tuned for news about this one-and about the rest of the series-yes, series!!! I know, I never, ever do series or sequels, but I have two planned, somehow.

It's Excerpt Monday at Romance Divas and this week I'm playing along! Here's an excerpt from my latest novel, A 21ST CENTURY COURTESAN:
I learned about something called suspension of disbelief a number of years ago in one of my English Lit classes. This is when a writer must make their reader suspend their disbelief in the unusual long enough to be drawn in and believe in the world the writer has created.
It’s something like that with my line of work. Our clients must suspend their disbelief long enough to believe the girl likes it. My particular ‘talent’, if you want to call it that-my particular perversion, really-is that they don’t have to do that with me. The truth is, I love it.
This is my dirty little secret. Because this is supposed to be taboo among the professionals of my world. Call girls. Prostitutes. Hookers. It doesn’t matter what you call us. The fact is, I get paid for sex. And it’s the only kind of sex I can get off on.
Who knew a nice Jewish girl from the Valley could end up here? Well, half Jewish, anyway, my father being a lapsed Catholic. And maybe I’ve never been all that nice.
I grew up in Van Nuys. Van Nuys is possibly the most generic, boring place on earth. Middle class, cardboard box houses that all look the same, block after block. The entire area looks as though a dull film has settled over it.
My family was at the lower end of the middle class. Not that we were poor. We always had a roof over our heads, food on the table. My father, a construction foreman, worked a lot, but he spent his money anywhere but at home. My mother never did much other than drink. Strange that he wasn’t the drinker. Jews don’t tend to be drinkers. Not that it ever stopped my mother. But my life has been a combination of the utterly dull and the most perverse, in every way, on every level. Classic hard life story, I know, but that’s my life. Or it was. Too f**king bad.
I make a lot of money. Enough to keep me very comfortable in my Hollywood Hills home. Enough to pay for the expensive clothes I buy at Barney’s and Kitson, my weekly facials and massage at the spa. Enough to pay for the breezy little Mercedes I drive, if it hadn’t been a gift from a happy client. This is why I do it.
Actually, that’s a lie. It’s what I tell myself when I’m not in the mood for the kind of deep, soul-searching honesty that keeps me up at night. How I justify it in the most basic, simple terms.
The truth, or part of it, anyway, is that I began in this business because I needed to distance myself from what I was before. From that lower middle class Jewish girl from the Valley whose mother was always passed out on the couch, surrounded by a sticky puddle of whatever she was drinking on the floor, the overflowing ashtrays. Repulsive. I won’t even allow my clients to smoke around me. If they don’t like it, they can find another girl. I’m at a point in my career where I can make a few demands of my own, and I do.
I am someone else entirely now.
I look different. I am different. No one from my old life would even recognize me. And truly, I wouldn’t care if they did. My life before this is almost in another dimension, in my mind. I like it that way.
I don’t look like the average girl from the Valley. My one gift from my mother is a fine-featured, beautiful face. I don’t mean to be vain; I am beautiful. People who pretend not to know these things are full of crap. I have long legs, a great body, hard and tight, even this close to thirty. My brown hair, highlighted in gold and caramel, hangs in layers almost to my waist. Most men prefer long hair on a woman, so I rarely cut it. My eyes are green, without the colored contacts the other girls wear. High cheekbones, a full, lush mouth. My ass is superb. I’ve been told so often enough. But what really gets them is that I love what I do. I love sex. I don’t care who I’m doing it with. I just like to f**k. I like to suck c**k. I love the anonymity of these men not knowing who I really am. I get off on it.
But there’s one catch. I have to get paid.
I have never had an orgasm with a man unless he’s paying to have sex with me. My first trick was like an epiphany. The moment he handed that wad of cash over into my greedy little hand, my body started to heat up, my legs began to shake, and I was coming almost as soon as he touched me. That’s when it became magic for me.
Which brings me to Enzo Alighieri.
He was one of my first clients. Enzo found me at this cheap call girl outfit where I got my start. And he knew right away I was different from the other girls there. He told me I was too beautiful, in his lovely Italian accent. I adored him on the spot. Not the way a normal woman might adore a lover. It was never that complicated. I liked him the moment he walked into the room. So sophisticated. Elegant. And he’s sexy. He really is, even at nearly seventy now. He has that commanding air about him; I’m sure everyone else in his life kowtows to him. Everyone but me. He lets me get away with anything.
I understand perfectly well that I’m nothing more than a sort of pet to him. A project. And a priceless piece of ass. He often tells me so. But it was Enzo who took me under his wing, got me out of that dump of a whorehouse in Hollywood and made me go to school.
Yes, school. Because if you’re going to be what amounts to a modern day American geisha, a 21st century courtesan, you must be well-educated, just as the geishas are. Just as the old Venetian courtesans were.
In addition to having studied history, literature, business and political science, I now know how to play golf and tennis, although not too well. Men prefer to win, don’t they? I read the Wall Street Journal and Forbes. I’ve studied massage therapy, I know wine. I’ve learned to speak German, a little French and Spanish, and even a few words of Japanese and Arabic, both of which are a necessity in my line of work.
The Middle Eastern rich have tons of money. More than the usual wealthy do, and they aren’t at all shy about spending it on whatever brings them pleasure. I admire that in a person. They’re the ones who fly the girls to Miami for a week, to Europe, even. Give us entire wardrobes of designer clothes. They like to have a lot of girls at once. I don’t mind. We all get paid, regardless, and it makes the workload a little easier. And the food is always superb. Unfortunately, I’m thinner than most of them like, so I don’t get those dates the way some of my friends do. But once a man is with me, he’ll always come back for more.
They can always tell, my clients. Even the most selfish, the most dense. They know right away that I’m into it, that my orgasms are the real thing. And these men are the sexual sophisticates of the world. They’ve had first-class ass in every corner of the planet: the pros in Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin.
I know I sound crude when I talk about these things, but this is a crude world. But I’m not bitter, I swear it. I see the beauty in the world, too. I’ve spent far too much time around the rich and privileged to be blind to beauty, not to appreciate it. I love the ballet, could watch it for hours. I could wander every museum on earth and never get enough. My current obsession is art history, and I’ve been taking classes off and on for the last few years, soaking it all up. This is something I do purely for me. I may be a classless kid from the Valley, but I’ve learned about the rest of the world, have seen enough to develop a real appetite for the finer things in life. And for me, art has become a necessity.
There is the gritty side to my lifestyle, of course. Even the girls at the top of this food chain can get into trouble. Amazon Discriminates!

I rarely get involved in 'political' debates, but this one really pisses me off! Amazon recently decided to strip all 'adult' material, including erotica and erotic romance, of sales rankings and search capabilities. They've also included ANY GLBT material-even YA fiction with gay characters that contain no sex whatsoever, and non-fiction books to help GLBT youths deal with issues, such as coming out.
There is no basis for this even in their own published policies! This will certainly hurt our sales as authors, will hurt the publishers who deal with Amazon, and their own customers-and ultimately, their own sales. I am encouraging everyone to buy their books at Barnes & Noble or Borders online, or other sources such as Fictionwise, until Amazon can be made to see the error of their ways.

He reached out, stroked a hand over Paul’s T-shirt-clad shoulder, and a rush of envy went through her. If only she could touch Paul so casually, express her desire for him so openly.

Jesus. She really was a mess. She didn’t even know who she wanted. And nothing was going to happen anyway. She may as well get over it.

But she was wet, aching, as much as she’d been in the shower.

They reached their campground on the edge of Lake Tahoe in another four hours, parked and got out of the car. The sun was lowering in the sky, casting darkening shadows over the crisp blue, touching the water in the lake with silver. Fir trees surrounded the lake, which sat like an enormous blue bowl, cradled by the surrounding mountains.

Jessie raised her arms over her head and stretched her back, breathing in the crisp, clean air. So gorgeous here. She was glad she’d come, despite her uncontrolled surges of lust. Paul came around the side of the car and slid an arm around her shoulders.

“Can I tempt you to get some food ready while we put the tent up?”

He could tempt her into doing almost anything, if only he knew it.

“Sure. I saw the ice chest in the back. I’ll take care of it.”

They spent some time getting the campsite together. The sun dove into the horizon in a blaze of summer sky glory. Shades of pink, amber and gold cast long shadows against the trees, touching the boughs with color, before sinking, leaving them in darkness other than the light from the fire they’d built and the two Coleman lanterns, the faint glow from the other campsites.

Dinner was simple, pan-fried steak and potatoes wrapped in foil and baked in the fire, a bottle of wine followed by another. Conversation was easy. Noah was easy to be with, warm, friendly, open. He and Paul sat side by side, laughing, touching, yet somehow still making Jessie feel included.

She’d had too much wine, but it didn’t seem to matter. Paul and Noah would take care of her, she knew. She could let go, for the first time in far too long.

Finally it was time to settle in for the night. Paul helped her to her feet.

“Whoa, Jess. Hang on.”

“I’m okay. Just have a nice little buzz going.”

“Maybe more than a little.” He grinned at her.

“Maybe.” She grinned back, her body going warm all over as he looped an arm around her waist.

They moved to the tent, and Noah held the flap back for them. It was a large tent, almost tall enough for Paul to stand up straight in. Noah was already spreading out their sleeping bags, Paul’s in the middle. Jessie sat on hers to take her shoes off.

Paul yawned, stretched.

“Anyone else tired?”

“A little sleepy from the wine,” Jessie said.

“Me too.” Noah pulled his shirt over his head, revealing tight abs and a wide chest. She could make out his muscle tone even in the dim light of the single lantern they’d taken into the tent with them.

Paul stripped his shirt off too. She’d seen him without a shirt before, and it was something she never got over. The lean lines of his body, his smooth skin, his nipples dark, surrounded by a sprinkling of black hair. She wanted to put her mouth there, to suck…

Stop it. Time to sleep.

The men stripped down to their boxer-briefs, and she could see they were both hard, aroused. She squeezed her thighs tightly, her sex burning with need.

So...I've been a terrible blogger as you can tell from the date of my last post. I've been trying to finish writing THE BEAUTY OF SURRENDER, my erotic Shibari rope bondage book, due out from Bantam/Delta in the fall, but I'm having a terrible time. I'm not sure what it is, but if this book ever gets finished, it'll be a miracle. Hopefully, I'm in line for a miracle, since the book is due February 1st. Wish me luck!
Researching Shibari has been interesting; I found some really great books. I read SHIBARI YOU CAN USE: JAPANESE ROPE BONDAGE AND EROTIC MACRAME. I thought the title was amusing, but this is a really hands-on demonstration of basic Shibari technique. I also loved Midori's THE SEDUCTIVE ART OF JAPANESE ROPE BONDAGE. Gorgeous photography!
I've been doing some research on trance states and meditation, too, which I'm using in the book; something I've read about before-I find it all fascinating! To see how bondage and trance states are connected, you'll just have to read my book when it comes out. I'll keep you posted!

Indulgence

September is my birthday month, so I'm, going to spend the entire month being self-indulgent. Or at least, thinking about it. One of my favorite indulgences, as many of you know, are shoes. I am a total shoe whore. I believe you can never have too many pair because no matter the piles of shoe boxes stacked in my bedroom closet, guest room closet, and office closet, there is, inevitably, that one outfit for which I don't have the right pair. The only cure is to keep buying them, in the hopes of eventually catching up. That's one of my rationalizations, anyway.
And since this is my birthday month and I'm not terribly happy about the number approaching (can I really be this close to 50?? Impossible!), I'm going to post about my favorite indulgence, and dream a little about the shoes I'm yearning to have, to hold in my hands, to admire, to have on my feet.
I love stilettos, but I'm also looking at flats right now-great for running around in the winter when it's too cool for flip-flops (which is what I usually wear, since I live in LA). I found some cute ones!

These are adorable, look comfortable, and I love that the name of the manufacturer is Naughty Monkey. :)
These are Michael Kors-leopard never goes out of style-used sparingly, of course.

The Selena shoe from L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani-love, love, love these! Such fierce shoes. Shoes like this make me feel powerful. And tall.
I adore these-bad secretary shoes...*G* They're Steve Madden-I have a number of his shoes. He makes my favorite silhouette.
These have a great vintage feel. My friend Lilli Feisty has turned me onto T-straps. Also made by Naughty Monkey, and so cute. They even look like they'd be comfortable-not a priority for me when it comes to shoes, obviously, but a nice bonus.
Another pair of Steve Maddens and I'm crazy about these shoes! I always like hardware on a shoe.
The Michael Kors Lolita shoe, and I really, really want them! I love the look of a stiletto-heeled spectator pump, and there are enough unusual design elements in this pair to make them truly special. *sigh*

I've been on the search for several years for the prefect pair of red shoes. These are by John Fluevog, the Hepburn shoe. They're just a little wacky, which I love.

As if the cover weren't enough to tempt you, I've interviewed Crystal to find out what goes on in the mind of an erotica author. Read on...

~Tell me about your writing journey: how did you begin to write, how did you come to write erotic romance?
I started out a chick lit writer. Yeah, I know…really different from where I ended up. But I’m a fan of snarky comedy, so that’s what I wanted to write. Don’t get me wrong, I still love snarky dialogue, but I also love the angst-ridden, naughty characters that I write now. Putting it all together works for me.

Getting into writing was something I did by accident. I’d just finished graduate school and began my first “real” job where I found myself without homework or assigned reading to fill my evenings. I read like mad until I got bored with it and cranky about all the writers messing with my favorite characters. So, I decided to try it myself. The rest is history.

~Everyone always wants to know about the glamorous life of a writer. What’s your typical day like? (You can make stuff up if you want-I won’t mind!).
Well, after my morning rubdown from Fabio, I slip into silk pajamas and then the words just flow forth from my fingers onto the page. Right, then the alarm goes off, I drag my ass out of bed, dress and head for my job at a university library. I do a full day of work teaching research skills to (toootally grateful and fascinated) college freshman before I head to the gym for a half hour (where Vin Deisel is my personal trainer. Really). After sweating and kinda wanting to die, I go home and open an artery to drip words out one at a time until I make page count. Then bedtime. Wash, rinse, repeat.

~What do you feel are the particular challenges in writing erotic fiction? What do you think are the most common mistakes made by new writers or those who are new to the genre?
I think the biggest issue that writers face is making sure the sex is graphic but not gratuitous. It has to be an integral part of the story and character development or it reads like porn rather than erotica or erotic romance. And those are very different genres with very different target audiences.

~You’ve written a number of shape-shifters (although often in a very unique way!). Why do you think shape-shifters are so popular with readers?
Well, who doesn’t want a fantasy man who’s a real animal in bed…and out of it? Rowr.

~Just because it’s a personal favorite of mine, please talk a bit about your dirty pirate story. And where did you get the idea for the candle scene? *G*My dirty pirate story, TREASURED, is all my best friend’s fault. She said there wasn’t enough pirate time travel romances…and there were never any brown-haired, brown eyed, history graduate student heroines like her. And so my heroine was born.

The candle scene is all my hero James’s fault. I told him not to do it, but he’s a pirate. He doesn’t deal well with authority.

~You write for multiple publishers-is it difficult to produce enough to keep them all happy? How much do you write each year?
Oh, jeez. I’m a bit of a workaholic, so while I stress out like everyone else, I’ve never had a lot of problem writing enough to keep everyone happy. That may change as I go on, but for now I’m doing okay. I also am an OCD list maker, so I’m anal about staying on schedule and making my page count every day. It’s all about discipline…and neuroses.

Last year, I’m estimate that I wrote somewhere between 300,000 and 400,000 words. Holy crap, I’m tired just looking at that.

~You’ve been pretty prolific, but it seems that all of us have those days where we doubt ourselves, where we get burned out or blocked. How do you cope with those moments?
I whine to my friends, they pick me up, dust me off, call people bad names on my behalf, and then kick me back into the game.

~Tell us about your ideal hero. And I want details!
It’s simple, really. Tall, dark, ripped, and gorgeous. Hung like a horse and knows how to use what Mother Nature blessed him with. Well-read and intelligent. Nothing is hotter than a smart man. (Nice! EB)

~If you could be any one of your characters, who would it be and why? Which of your characters do you feel is most like you?
I think the character that is most like me is the one from my very first story, EVERY WITCH WAY. They told me to write what I knew, so she’s me…with magical powers. Her name is Chloe, and she has a crazy family, weird co-workers, and a hero who decides the best way to keep her safe from werewolf terrorists is to just move in to her house…and then her bedroom. I just sold that book to Kensington Aphrodisia, and I believe it should be coming out sometime in late 2010 or early 2011.

~Tell us about your story in the SEXY BEAST V Anthology. And give us a li’l excerpt-I always like a good tease!
My story is called IN ICE and here’s what it’s about: When Jain Roberts’ ship crashes on a distant, futuristic planet, she’s rescued by Kesuk, the lusty clan leader of the Arctic Bears. This magnificent creature with white-blond hair and a potent masculinity haunts her dreams—dreams he intends to make deliciously real, as he draws her into a realm of complete sexual abandon.

And a little teaser excerpt:

“Help me! Please…somebody help.”

Jain’s teeth chattered as she scanned the foreign landscape. Snow covered the rocky ground in a thick layer, and massive trees surrounded the clearing on all sides, hemming her in so she couldn’t get her bearings. Night began to fall, and the temperature dropped rapidly. Crossing her arms over her breasts, she rubbed her numb hands over her biceps to try and stimulate circulation. God, she was so cold. Ice bit into her legs, scraping the skin away and leaving her feet raw and bleeding.

She’d been wandering around naked since her ship crashed, and her personal pod had released her from cryogenic freeze. Had anyone else made it out? The ship had held a full crew and one other passenger besides her. It had exploded in a fiery array of reds, yellows, and oranges, but she’d seen no one else from the ship. The roiling smoke had spun through the towering trees and into the afternoon sky in twists of black soot. Since no rescue party had responded to the crash, she assumed she’d landed in an uninhabited area.

“Hellooooo!” Her voice echoed over the frozen landscape.

With each moment that passed, she felt her strength draining, her ability to reason slipping away. She struggled to collect her wandering thoughts, to plan how to save herself. Fading in and out of consciousness, she wondered how much longer she could last without shelter. She had no idea what planet she was on. She should have landed on Aquatilis, where her brother worked as a marine geneticist, but Aquatilis was almost completely covered in water, and she was in the middle of a mountain range. Something had gone seriously wrong. There weren’t supposed to be any other inhabitable planets in this solar system, but she could breathe and the gravity was almost normal. Where the hell was she?

Kesuk had seen the fiery explosion in the distance and had come to investigate. His sentries fanned out to surround the clearing. The feud with the Browns had just been settled, but it looked as though they wished to start again. He heaved a weary sigh, his paws crunching through the thick sheet of ice as he drew nearer the inferno. Would they never learn?

Their leaders smiled and bowed to his face while their warriors slaughtered his livestock and stole his women. He slid his tongue over his long fangs, enjoying the idea of catching them breaking the pact. His young daughter might enjoy a Brown slave. A low growl of pleasure rumbled through his chest at the thought. He hadn’t started this feud, but he’d finish it.

Relishing the prospect of a good fight, he quickened his pace. Rolling his shoulders, he stretched into a lumbering run, his long strides eating the distance. Pricking his ears, he stayed alert for signs of an ambush.

“Help me.”

The ragged cry sounded to his left, bringing him up short. His breath snorted clouds in the icy air as he waited to hear it again. Padding lightly, he crept between the trees, winding his way toward the origin of the noise.

A woman. A woman unlike any he’d ever seen. Naked, glorious, tiny, her short tufts of brown hair sleek against her skull. Her eyes drew him, greener than the leaves of a Sitka tree. He ran his tongue down a curved canine tooth, eyeing her softly curved form, the thatch of tight dark curls between her slim thighs. Perhaps it was not his daughter who would gain a slave this day. Her sudden appearance and odd coloring demanded he examine her more closely. His men would investigate the explosion and seek him out to report their findings. They knew their duty because he trained them well.

Foolish of her clan to allow her out alone. What was she doing in the borderlands? Her skin was too pale to be a Black or a Brown. He sighed in regret as he drew near. Perhaps she was addled; such birth defects or misfortunes were known to happen. She wandered through the snow, her broken gait and dazed expression making it obvious she would freeze to death. And soon. He raised his nose to the wind, trying to catch her scent. She wasn’t of his clan, that much he knew, but she was on his land.

She belonged to him.

I’d be on board the Serenity, flying around space with a genius crazy chick, a hot doctor, hotter mercenaries, and a space hooker.

~Do you have a dream car?
A Harley Davidson motorcycle…and a hot man to drive me around on it.

~Do you have a star crush?
Vin Deisel. The bod, the voice. He could make me come on command.

~On a man: boxers, briefs or commando?
Boxers, I like a present to unwrap. And briefs are just…no.

~Is there anything people would be shocked to know about you? C’mon-you know you want to tell!

~What projects are you working on and what can we expect to see released soon?
I have several books coming out in the next year. For e-books, I have BLACK OPALS coming out from Ellora’s Cave and TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART from Samhain Publishing in October of 2008. Later this year, I have a short story coming out from Harlequin Spice Briefs called WILD. In January, the sequel to my Samhain release comes out, BIG GIRLS DON’T DIE.

For print books, the sequel to “In Ice” comes out in December of 2008, called CARNAL DESIRES. Another erotic shape-shifter releases in May 2009, ON THE PROWL. In October of 2009, I have a novella in a holiday anthology from Kensington Aphrodisia called NAUGHTY OR NICE.

And I just sold three new erotic romances to Kensington, two dark futuristic shape-shifters, DANGEROUS TEMPTATION and KITH AND KIN, and one urban fantasy erotic romance, EVERY WITCH WAY. They should come out in 2009-2011.

What else is new with me? I turned in revisions on my upcoming March 2009 book, A 21ST CENTURY COURTESAN and am waiting to hear back from my editor-let's hope she likes what I did with the book! I'm just getting started on my next book about Shibari rope bondage-getting to know my characters, developing the conflict, getting inside their heads. It's a two-part book, in much the same way EXOTICA is, and in the first story, the hero is insisting I do most of the story from his point of view, including the opening scene. He is a Dom, a very powerful personality, so I'm not surprised he's already bossing me around. We may have a little power struggle before this book is done...

Home from RW Conference and Catching Up!

I've been home since last Monday night, but have been exhausted and working on a deadline, so forgive me for my long-delayed blogging!
So much happened while I was away. It started with my fellow Smutketeers (RG Alexander, Crystal Jordan & Lillian Feisty) plus RG's husband, The Cookie (he's an amazing chef, thus the nickname), meeting at Feisty's house in Nevada for a few days of writerly bonding pre-conference. The Cookie cooked like mad, we all ate like mad, lounged around, and did our Steampunk photo shoot. Here's a peek at the results:The shoot was crazy-we made the guys (The Cookie and Feisty's husband, Manroot) drive us out into the middle of the Nevada desert in nearly 100 degree heat and gale-force winds and carry a 7 foot long couch out to the edge of a hill, where we posed for the pics. We had Feisty's 3 1/2 year old with us (Little Manroot), dressed as Superman. (hey-we were all in costume-he wanted in on the action). It was weird and awesome and *hot* and I can't believe the guys indulged us this way. Thank you, Cookie and Manroot!

Back at the house, we ate and drank our way through the rest of the weekend, went out to dinner and then to the oldest bar in Nevada. (Feisty's friend, Bona {love ya, you dirty girl!}, Crystal, RG, The fabulous Cookie, Feisty, me)

...then we headed to San Francisco in two cars on Monday.
We arrived at the SF Marriott and the madness began-a little crazier this year since Feisty is on crutches (roller derby accident) (and yeah, we get that look from everyone when we tried to explain). The week began with a lovely dinner with my agent, Roberta Brown, and a bunch of her authors, including Saskia Walker, who came in from the UK and was so jet-lagged, poor thing! But I loved getting to know her!
The rest of the week went by in a blur: The Literacy for Life Signing on Wednesday night (I started in this adorable Betsy Johnson jacket over my T-shirt, but it was incredibly hot in that ballroom with several hundred other authors, so I had to take it off-I felt underdressed).
Thursday night was the Passionate Ink cocktail party, which was fun and a bit racy, with bullet vibrators as party favors (the best party gift ever!). Those little gadgets are powerful! Just sayin'... Then there was the Diva dinner, and I have no good pics yet as I don't currently have a camera and must rely on other people to send them to me (if you have any, please send!). That was insane and fun-over 70 Divas at Bucca di Beppo, where they served enough food for 200. After that I slipped into the Kiss of Death chapter contest to see if my crit partner, Gemma Halliday, would win an award (alas, she didn't win, but that must have been some sort of weird cosmic fluke, because her books rock!). Slipped back out to work my local RWA chapter's Moonlight Madness booth until nearly midnight, went back to my room and fell into bed.

Lunch with my agent on Friday, then publisher parties all night long. I wore the cutest little white dress to the Bantam and Berkley parties:(RG Alexander, me, Loribelle Hunt, Jennifer Leeland at the Berkley party)

...then I changed into jeans and lower heels for the Harlequin party-and I'm glad I did!
Wild dancing there, before a bunch of us took off to a little bar to sing karaoke. No pics from karaoke. What happens at karaoke, stays in...oh, nevermind...

Saturday Christina Cross and I took Sandy Barkevitch to get her belly button pierced at Body Manipulations (someone always gets pierced or tattooed at conference-it's a Diva tradition). The guys there were so, so nice, and her piercer did a great job. She handled it like a champ! I was just bummed that I didn't have time to hang out and do some shopping; I had to run back to the hotel to do the Bantam signing. I have no pics-I can't even remember if anyone came by and photographed me. Christina Cross, was my booksigning bitch (an endearing term for someone who stands there with me and piles books on the table, puts 'autographed copy' stickers on them, inserts bookmarks, and chats with people waiting in line. Thank you, darling-you were fabulous!).
Saturday night was the Rita and Golden Heart awards, and Feisty and I were so wiped out we mostly napped through them, then went to a friend's party later for a little while.
Sunday most people were leaving, and I was so tired, I just let myself sleep. I hate those goodbye's, anyway. I always cry the last day of conference-it's too sad! We all get so attached to each other. Conference is such a whirlwind-it's like being through a tornado together. Most people took off, and Feisty and I lounged around until it was time for me to go get my tattoo finished!
I started this tattoo while I was in SF in March-about 5 hours on the table and I couldn't take anymore, so it was left mostly uncolored. So off I went to Tattoo City to see the incomparable Mary Joy Scott. 6 hours later, my tattoo was done!Usually I'm pumped up on endorphins while being tattooed, but this time I lost them after about 3 1/2 hours, so it was a bit grueling, but SO worth it! Isn't she beautiful? She covers most of my left side/back. I'm still healing but already thinking of adding on. I think some floating cherry blossoms would be pretty...
I'm also thinking ahead to conference next year-I can't wait to see everyone again! I miss you, Divas!
Meanwhile, I'm back at my computer, trying to reach an August 15th revision deadline. I would have been done already, but then I had an epiphany about my hero and have gone back in to weave it all together. A writer's work is never done. Good thing I love it so much!
Next up: I'm allowing myself a two day break before I start writing my next book about Shibari rope bondage. Funnnn research!

RWA Conference and other stuff!

This week is insane! I just turned in a proposal for my next contracted book over the weekend, I'm still working on revisions for A 21ST CENTURY COURTESAN, my April 2009 release-and I'm posting the cover again just because it's so gorgeous!
I'm also getting ready to leave for the Romance Writers of America conference in San Francisco. Lots to do for that, between running the Diva dinner on Thursday night and as a RWA chapter president, I'll also be going to the Chapter Leadership Seminar and the Annual General Meeting this year. Not to mention the usual face-to-face meetings with my agent and editor, three publisher parties, trying to squeeze in a few workshops, and the book signings! I hope anyone who is in SF will come by and see me.

Let me count the ways...
Yeah, I can always find a dozen ways to avoid writing. Recently while I was trying to finish my spring 2009 release, A 21ST CENTURY COURTESAN, I actually got down on my hands and knees and took some spray bleach and a toothbrush to the tile grout on my kitchen floor. Today it's been watching music videos on YouTube. I really should be writing but I've been listening to some really great music, which is good for the soul, right? Since I'm too tech stoopid to figure out how to add actual videos here, I have these handy dandy links to some stuff I've been rockin' out to today...

But no matter how you feel about the film, you have to admit, you almost can't find two prettier people than Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio at that age. I adore a good tragedy.

My First Shoe Day Blog!

Do you ever get that tingly feeling in your stomach just looking at a really fabulous pair of shoes? Do a pair of shiny stiletto heels make you want to touch them, wear them, own them? Do a pair of great wedge espadrilles make a small, warm shiver run up your spine?
I was in Vegas once a few years ago and discovered the Jimmy Choo store in the Venetian Hotel. I walked in and it was...magic. Every pair was more beautiful than the last. And then I saw them, that one pair of shoes that will stay with me forever, the pair that nearly made me, prissy girl that I am, drool in a public place. They were a deep, burnished orangy-gold silk with the most delicate 4 inch stiletto heels, a sweet, pointy little toe and a narrow strap, at the end of which was a small tassle made of tiny golden chains. Even now, I get all trembly simply thinking about them. I stared and stared. I dared to reach out and stroke them with one gentle fingertip. I left needing a cigarette. And I don't smoke.

Those of you who know me know I love shoes. Actually, you could say I'm obsessed. So, I thought I'd start a monthly Shoe Day on my blog, for those of you who enjoy shoes as much as I do. Okay, you don't have to enjoy them quite as much...
Let's start out with some of my own favorite pairs...
My new gladiator sandals are so in, but I'd love them even if they weren't. There's something almost bondage-y about all those straps. And they're comfortable-bonus!
Another pair of wedges, my new candy-print espadrilles. These shoes just say summer to me! They look great with a pair of rolled-up jeans. I have a particular love for strange shoes, as you can see.

These are all of my red shoes. I can't remember what inspired this particular pic, but I just like looking at it. Can't have too many red shoes! Hmm...maybe I need to go shopping...For you more casual girls, my newest flip-flops, in bronze and cream. They're so neutral, they go with everything. And flip-flops barely even count as shoes, so you can have dozens of them! I'm managing with 7 or 8 pair.

I love these white pumps! They're sort of Barbara Bush, but in a twisted way. Love the hardware. I think they're so hot! Killer shoes, but I am totally willing to sacrifice comfort for shoes of this caliber. They're even hotter in person.These are my newest stilettos, and they are truly the sexiest shoes ever! So much better in person. They are so sleek and shining, the straps crossing over the toes at exactly the right spot. I was with my friend last week, Lillian Feisty, who recently broke her leg. She saw these shoes and went so nuts over them, she had to try them on, cast and all. These are the kind of shoes you simply MUST put on your feet. And they're mine. *sigh*
I think that's all I can take for one evening. I think I'll go upstairs and stare into my closet as I drift off to sleep...

I just finished writing this book, and I think it's my best work yet. I spoke with my editor today, and she thinks so, too, which is a huge compliment coming from her, so I'm thrilled! I also got a release date: April 2009, and my first look at the cover! The Bantam art department rocks! I don't even have official cover copy on it yet-I'll post a blurb as soon as I have it! But I can tell you this: A 21ST CENTURY COURTESAN is the story of Valentine Day, who's worked as a high class call girl for nearly ten years when she meets a man who turns her world upside down. This story is written in first person, and it's a very different kind of book. I can't wait to see if readers will be as in love with this story as my editor and I are!
Valentine is very dark and troubled. I love complicated characters! Only once have I ever written a character that was all sweetness and light (April in THE DARK GARDEN) and she was the secondary heroine. If you're a writer, what are your favorite kind of characters to write? If you're a reader, what sort of characters do you like to read? And is it different depending on whether it's the hero or heroine?

A 21st Century Courtesan is finished!

I've been working on this book since January, and had some major interruptions in between -my own month-long 102 fever, and then my father had open-heart surgery and required a lot of care. But the book is done! I sent it to my editor late last night, with sweating palms and pounding heart. It never gets any easier, and there is a lot at stake with this book. It's very different, and although I did get my editor's permission to write these different aspects into the story, I'm praying she's satisfied with the execution.
A 21st CENTURY COURTESAN is the story of Valentine Day, a modern day call girl who serves the wealthy elite of the world. There is a secret to her success, one which keeps her bound to this business long after the allure of the money has faded. But when she meets Joshua Spencer, her world comes crashing down around her, and she can no longer continue the life she's led for nearly ten years.
This is a deeply psychological book, exploring why Valentine has become who she is, and what she must do in order to truly leave that life behind and create a new one. The story is gritty, emotional, intense, and it was an emotional roller coaster for me while writing it. I feel that it's some of my best work to date-now I'm waiting with fingers crossed to see if my editor feels the same way!
As writers, we aren't always still in love with a book by the time we're done with it. Sometimes we even hate it-lol! But I love this book-if my editor doesn't, I admit I'll be a bit crushed. Wish me luck!
Meanwhile-how many of you love your books while you're working on them? One of my writer friends always falls in love with her ideas, but then sort of hates the book while she's writing it, every time! Torture! I always love mine (except for one!), and begin to hate it around the time I have to proof galleys, which means reading through it for the bazillionth time.
Today I'm taking a break before launching into my next project-my first male/male erotic story, a short novella I'm hoping to sell. I'm giving myself three weeks to complete it, and then I start my next novel for Bantam, a book about Shibari, the art of Japanese rope bondage. More about that later!

So, one of my e-books with Phaze, BREAKING SKYE, is going to be included in the BDSM print anthology, SURRENDER, along with authors Eliza Gayle, Alessia Brio and Reece Gabriel! We just got our release date-June 23rd-and they've done a really gorgeous cover for us! I'm waiting until release day to unveil it, so you'll have to check back!
Meanwhile, I'm almost done with my 21st Century Courtesan book-I'm on the final chapter. This book has gone so smoothly, it's been a little scary (or maybe I'm being paranoid?), but of course, now that I'm at the end I'm having one block after another. Endings are always hard for me. You have to tie everything up, make everything come full circle, and I'm always afraid it's going to be cheesy, which I hate-lol! I love romance, but I cannot write the cheese! My friend Dana Belfry always says "But I love the cheese", so I may have to dedicate any cheese in this book to her. *G*
Speaking of Dana, she and I met a few writer friends, Shante' Lanay and my cp of 6 1/2 years, the fabulous Gemma Halliday, at Venice Beach on Saturday. I love Venice Beach-all those $6.00 sunglasses, the incense, the cheap silver jewelry, the people-watching-and OMG, the full on freak show was out in force! And they now have an actual Freak Show on the boardwalk. In front of the place was a guy holding a two-headed snake, aptly named Laverne & Shirley, which I think is hysterical. I got to pet her, which completely freaked out Gemma and Shante'. Luckily, Dana didn't mid hanging out and taking a picture of my weird little friend.That's it for my adventures until I get this book done and turned in. I'll be chained to my computer for the next 10 days. Wish me luck! Donations of chocolate are welcome and can be left quietly on the front porch.

We met on the Passionate Ink forum, the Romance Writer's of America erotic romance author's chapter, and started talking about tattoos. Adriana just got her very first tattoo, so I thought it'd be fun to have her here, talking about her experience as a 'tattoo virgin' losing her virginity, and of course, to tell us a bit about her books!

Thanks so much for inviting me to be here today, Eden, and congrats on the release of your tattoo fetish story "The Art of Desire" in Hot Nights and Dark Desires! You've had some great blogs and interviews up all month to celebrate. It looks like I'm the tattoo virgin of the bunch - in fact, apart from the age difference, I'm a little like your heroine: "a sheltered young woman turned on by the idea of getting tattooed."

Let me back up a second and tell you a bit about myself. Adriana Kraft is actually the pen name under which my husband and I write erotic romance together. If you think "married" and "erotic" don't go together, come read our books!

My tattoo is about transformation. Growing up I didn't know anyone who had tattoos. If I thought about it at all, I might have associated it with circuses, or maybe carnivals, but not with other people like me. That didn't change much when I reached adulthood. I travelled in circles where it wasn't the norm.

I do think body art has been creeping gradually into mainstream culture, though I couldn't begin to put dates on that change. In the last decade I've crossed paths with people sporting tattoos more and more often, in a range of social circles. However my choice to transform into a tattoo wearer wasn't about conforming to the new norm, but rather about breaking out of old ones, especially as a writer of erotic romance. And it was a character we wrote who actually planted the seed, if that's possible.

We'd written and submitted several manuscripts and doggedly kept on writing, polishing and submitting, waiting for something to break. Over two years ago, not long before our first contract offer, we created the character of Merry Delaney, a recently widowed forty year old woman who'd been pretty sheltered and focused on raising her daughter and caring for her dying husband. We didn't know when we started putting her story on the page that she'd want a tattoo - but Merry emerged from her cocoon, started tasting everything she'd been missing out on, and decided getting a tattoo was part of her transformation.

We polished that manuscript - The Merry Widow - and it was picked up by Whiskey Creek Press Torrid and published in January, 2008 (available as an e-book and in print). There's always a part of us in every character we write, and I know I identified with the way Merry reveled in her new freedom. She just thinks life is delicious.

I'm part of an exciting group of about 30 authors who've banded together for mutual support and promotion, the Midnight Seductions Authors. One of our members blogged about tattoos in April at the MSA blog and I found myself confessing I'd been thinking about getting one. Events tumbled forward fast from that point - by the next day, I'd made my decision and had a plan. I blogged about my progress in April and May at MySpace.

I thought I wasn't nervous, and mostly I wasn't, but I did act out a little: after I finally got the details on the best local tattoo parlor from a co-worker, I went silent and didn't tell my husband for several days. He finally prodded the information loose from me, and that was all it took. Within twenty four hours I had the appointment set.

There was never any question what I wanted for a tattoo: Merry's butterfly was mine, from the beginning, though not as flamboyant as the stunning tat our cover artist gave her. Besides being beautiful, a butterfly symbolizes so many things I love: nature, renewal, spring, freedom, and above all, transformation and miracle. It's a symbol of owning my whole self.

I decided to place it where I could have choices about sharing it. It's on my shoulder blade, so it's covered up most of the time, but easy to reveal if I want to share it, and high enough that it'll be visible when I wear a swimsuit or halter top.

The actual process was almost a letdown - it seemed very ordinary, didn't really hurt, and hardly matched my great expectations. But having it - that's a spiritual experience, a naughty little secret and a celebration all rolled into one. Probably very much like Merry's.

When Eden emailed me about being featured as an “inked author” I jumped at the chance. I love talking about my tattoos. A bit of background: I got my first tattoo when I was 25. It was a triangular modern primitive piece that hung between my shoulder blades. It was done by Patrick Conlon, who’s become something of a name . . . a few years later I was ready to expand it. Pat and I took it from its smallish beginnings to something simply amazing that spans my back from nape to waist (the painting shown here is of my back). A year or so later Pat and I added my bracelet. The backpiece is easily missed, for all it’s massive size. I wanted something I could see, something that was a little more public.

For me, being tattooed is about making a statement of tribal association. Much like the tattoos of the Japanese Yakuzi. The tattoo both claims a place in the specific society, and declares one’s commitment to it, as well as sets one apart from the mainstream, declaring one once and for all a part of the “other”.

In my other life I’m an award winning poet (how’s that for a secret?). I think this narrative poem says it best:

The Body as Fact

The burning question of our generation is not what car to buy. And it’s not what soda to drink (though historians will view commercials, and tell you differently). The question is what to do with the instincts we posses when they are no longer useful: We exist, we love, bound up in want need pheromone induced spark lust love at first sight call it what you will crap. Psychoanalysis occurs because we're out of touch, need someone else to tell us what's going on in our ids. Our common answer is a return to the primitive. A return to the body

as art, the body as artifact, the body as fact. Expression becomes a form of body language, or maybe its the other way round. Septum, cock, lobe, hood, the places we pierce with rings and bars and bones trip off the tongue (which also gets pierced, dumbbells of varying gages clicking when we kiss). We add tattoos: Black geometric shapes, the occasional natural curve

or coloured enhancement. Patterns not seen in generations (except in faded paintings and dusty daguerreotypes) stretch themselves around biceps, slide across pectorals and cleave to shoulder blades. A parade goes past each day . . . Maori, Iroquois, Huron, Ibo, Iniut, Aztec.

Self‑mutilation, self‑love, self-glorification. All together and at once tribal affiliations are becoming necessary—we’re bound together in hate, in joy, in apathy, in nihilism, in love. The instincts are intact . . . our biological hearts are more than ticking: Pounding in time under the streetlights as we pass.

An Interview with Jaci Burton!

My guest blogger today is Jaci Burton! Jaci is a National Bestselling author of contemporary erotic romance and paranormal romance. She writes for four publishers, so her life is spent juggling deadlines and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Jaci is an award winning author of over 40 books, and has won the Romantic Times Bookclub Magazine’s Reviewer’s Choice Award as well as The Romance Studio’s Cupid and Psyche Awards. Jaci makes her home in Oklahoma with her husband Charlie and more dogs than she can count.

~Tell me about your writing journey. When did you begin to write? How long did it take you to publish?
My first endeavor at writing was early fanfiction way before fanfiction was born. My cousin and I used to write scripts together when we were twelve (which was a really, really, really long time ago) based on a popular tv show—a western. Very sexy romantic western, with comedy touches. We’d mail our scripts back and forth to each other (that’s how long ago it was—email hadn’t been invented yet!). I had always loved to write, but thought of it as a hobby.

I read my first romance when I was 17—Kathleen Woodiwiss’s The Flame and The Flower—and my love for romance was born. It wasn’t until many years later that I tried my hand at writing a book—a historical—but I had to put it aside as the demands of career and raising a family took precedence.

Seven years ago I met and married my current husband, and told him I had always wanted to write a book. He encouraged me to follow my dream, so I did. I started writing with an eye to publication in 2001, and in 2003 sold my first book to Ellora’s Cave. My writing career escalated after that first book and several years later sold to Bantam Dell, to Berkley and to Samhain Publishing.

~You write for multiple publishers-is it difficult to produce enough to keep them all happy? How much do you write each year?
It’s never difficult to produce enough. I’m constantly bombarded with stories in my head. I generally write about 4 single titles a year, and a novella or two.

~You also write in multiple genres. Do you find it difficult to switch gears from romance to erotic romance to your demon books?
Not at all. I love being able to switch from one genre to another. It cleanses the mental palate. If I’m worn out from writing a paranormal, I know my next book is an erotic contemporary, or a general romance, which will be completely different. Always something new and exciting awaiting me with the next book. My job is so much fun.

~As you know, this month I’m celebrating the release of my story, THE ART OF DESIRE, in the Bantam anthology, HOT NIGHTS, DARK DESIRES, with authors Stephanie Tyler and Sydney Croft. THE ART OF DESIRE is about a woman with a tattoo fetish. Tell me about your own tattoo experience-whatever you’d like to share.
I love tattoos! I think they’re beautiful expressions of body art. I got my first tattoo in my thirties and now I have four. I’d like to get one more, but I don’t know what I’ll get or where I’ll get it yet. My husband has two and he’s going to get one more also. I think it’s a beautiful way to express yourself.

~How do you think those of us who love body art are impacted by cultural perspectives?
I see more and more tattoos on people these days, young and old. Tattoos are embraced more now than ever before, as matter of fact as having your ears pierced. I haven’t really heard much negativity associated with tattoos. I suppose if your face is tattooed you might get some flak, but I think nowadays they’ve become an acceptable part of culture. Then again, that probably all depends on where you live and how extensively you’re tattooed.

~Are any of your characters tattooed? How do you think that sort of detail is important to creating a character?
I’ve had several characters tattooed, from genitalia (Bound To Trust) to wearing a symbol associated with their designation in a paranormal society (League of 7 Seas-Dolphin’s Playground and Paradise Discovery). I think a tattoo can say much about a character, who they are, how they think, their belonging within a culture, to how they function biologically.

~Do you model your heroes on real people or are they entirely constructs of your imagination?
I think to some extent my heroes are always an extension of my husband. There are characteristics of the things I love most about him in every hero I write. But every hero is a figment of my imagination.

~Tell me about your February release, RIDING WILD.
RIDING WILD is the first book in my new Wild Riders series from Berkley Heat, about sexy Harley riding bad boys who work undercover for the U.S. Government. Mac is one of the Wild Riders, and his job is to break into a museum and steal an artifact that hides a deadly virus before that artifact can be moved to the next museum and possibly into the hands of someone who wants the virus to sell to the highest bidder. Lily is a private investigator hired to check possibly lax museum security, and she catches Mac in the act of stealing the artifact, which slams her right in the middle of Mac’s undercover operation.

Mac and Lily have a history together. When Mac was young and in trouble, he and Lily fell in love. Since Lily was from a rich, prominent family, the last thing Mac wanted to do was drag her down the wrong road with him, so he dumped her. Lily doesn’t know what Mac did to straighten out his life, and he can’t tell her without revealing everything about the Wild Riders and the case he’s working on, so he and Lily go on an amazing trek together, filled with suspense, secrets, romance and fun, hot sex.

~What do you have coming out next? Will we see another Demon Hunter book soon?
I have several books releasing this year. NOTHING PERSONAL releases in print from Samhain in June. DARE TO LOVE releases in e-book from Samhain in July. RIDING TEMPTATION, the second Wild Riders book, releases from Berkley Heat in October. And yes, the third Demon Hunters book, THE DARKEST TOUCH, releases October 28^th from Bantam Dell.

~The cover for your upcoming October release, RIDING TEMPTATION, is hot! Do you have any say over your covers with any of your publishers?
Thank you! I love the cover for RIDING TEMPTATION! Cover input varies by publisher. With Bantam Dell, I get no input at all. My editor works with the cover art department. Fortunately, Bantam does an incredible job with covers (as you well know) and I’ve loved every cover I’ve gotten from them. With Berkley, my editor and I talk about the cover and she asks me what my vision is. Berkley has given me awesome covers, too. With Samhain, we fill out a cover sheet outlining the hero and heroine and a summary from the book, but my editor actually handles my cover art because she’s great at knowing the best covers for my stories.

~You’ve been incredibly prolific, but it seems that all of us have those days where we doubt ourselves, where we get burned out, get blocked. How do you cope with those moments?
Ugh. Don’t we all have days like that? Sometimes I just need to step away, clear my head and take a day off. It usually helps. If I’m on deadline and I really need to do the work, I push through it and write, even if it’s awful. I know I can edit it later, but you can’t edit what isn’t there. Sometimes you just have to write, even if you don’t feel like it or you think what you’re writing is pure crap. It can always be fixed. But you can’t fix what you don’t write.

~What is your best piece of advice for aspiring writers?
Don’t ever give up on yourself, and always take your writing career seriously. If you don’t, no one else will.

It's still tattoo month on my blog since I'm celebrating the release of my novella, THE ART OF DESIRE, in the Bantam anthology, HOT NIGHTS, DARK DESIRES. Let's see what the fabulous Ms. Feisty has to say about tattoos...

I’ve spent a lot of time in tattoo shops.

My fascination began when I was a teenager, and associated tattoos with rebellion. I was a bit of a rebel myself , back then, and I was always looking for ways to enhance my image as a dissenter.

Back then (late 80s), tattoos were somewhat rare. Most of the work I saw was on bikers and sailors (two groups of men I still find myself quite attracted to) and I loved the rough aspect of all the tattoos I saw. Faded birds and anchors, dragons and tigers. And flames. There were always flames. I loved them. Then, tattoos were a kind of secret handshake. I’m cool, see? I have this tattoo to prove it!

So, when I was seventeen, I went down to Pinkie’s in downtown San Jose. It was the summer. I picked a cross and had it permanently drawn onto my right shoulder. There was no waiver to sign, no assurance that the shop was clean. No one cared that I was underage. No one cared that I smelled like Bartles and James wine coolers. And so thirty minutes later I emerged with a fresh cross inked onto my skin.

I must have wiggled. The base of the cross came out crooked, a fact my best friend Robyn loved to point out over the years that followed. Even when I got that cross covered up she still made fun of me. Such is life. Even bad tattoos have a story.

Anyway, I continued to be obsessed with tattoos, especially traditional, old school designs. And so I covered up my cross with nothing less than a MOM tattoo. I mean, my mom died, so I thought it was an appropriate thing to do. Also, it was done buy a really hot guy, so the pain was not bad at all. (I have found that tattoo pain is much more pleasurable when the artist is a hot guy.)
So then, last year, I started with the flowers. I wanted to have roses on my back, like an entire vine of them. And birds. And twigs. So I went to Mary Joy Scott in San Francisco and it turns out she loves vintage flowers. She drew up this design and we were off. It took two sessions, of about four hours each. I absolutely loved the final product. Besides the roses, I have two swallows, a mama with twigs in her mouth, and a baby bird. And the clovers are for my Irish grandmother and my mother.

I loved the roses so much, I decided to continue them onto the front of my chest. I blogged on it HERE actually.

I also have a peony on my left ankle, and my most recent tattoo is morning glories on my right calf. I also wanted a bee because I just think they are cool. Sometimes that’s reason enough for a tattoo. J T o be honest, I have a lot more tattoos planned, and for no other reason than I just like the designs. Now, every time I sell a book, I’m getting a tattoo to celebrate it. I got the morning glories and the bee with my first advance from Grand Central Publishing.

Nowadays everyone is getting tattoos. Hell, my dentist, a woman who had no problem telling me on several occasions that she did not like tattoos, is now getting one. They are not the secret handshake they used to be. But that’s okay. Because as the popularity of tattoos has grown, so has the quality of work. In fact, nowadays, many tattoo artists are traditional artists in their own right. And so I see a lot less of those crudely drawn designs that were common just twenty years ago. And that’s a good thing because, for me, there is nothing better than checking out an amazing tattoo on someone else.

And if just happens to be on a biker or a sailor, so be it.
